We have all experienced tummy aches at some point or another. In most instances, abdominal pain is short lived, and goes away without much ado. Yet, there are times when we experience severe stomach pain, which merits the attention of a qualified, medical professional.

Severe stomach pain can arise due to varied reasons, and its causative factor may sometimes be hard to pinpoint. However, diseases such as infectious diarrhea and gastroenteritis, which is commonly referred to as stomach flu, can cause severe stomach pain in certain individuals. Gastritis and the presence of ulcers too, are known to result in abdominal discomfort, while constipation and hemorrhoids can also cause stomach aches in many susceptible individuals.

Sometimes, when a person experiences a severe stomach pain, it could be due to appendicitis, peritonitis, or due to an infection of the gall bladder. The presence of large kidney stones or cystitis may also cause acute abdominal pain. In all such instances, prompt medical attention is critical, so as to minimize complications, that it would otherwise result in.

Severe stomach pain can, at times, be due to pelvic inflammatory disease. Those who suffer from this malady are advised to seek medical attention too, so that suitable antibiotics can be administered, which is said to halt the disease in its tracks, in mostinstances.

Tumors too, can give rise to severe stomach pain, sometimes. Such individuals require prompt medical care, if the tumor is to be removed of if the spread of the tumor is to be kept in check.

Those who are pregnant may also experience severe stomach pain. This may indicate an ectopic pregnancy or it may indicate a miscarriage, and therefore gynecological advice needs to be sought, without undue delay.

If severe abdominal pain is accompanied by unusual bleeding, persistent vomiting or high fever, the chances are that something is definitely amiss. Difficulty in breathing and pain which lasts for more than a couple of days, too, needs to be subject to a thorough evaluation and might even warrant admission to a nearby hospital.

A layman is generally unable to distinguish the cause of abdominal pain, so self-diagnosis is best avoided, in most instances. However, a qualified physician is more capable of accurate diagnosis based on factors, such as other accompanying symptoms, the severity of the pain experienced and the exact placement of the ensuing discomfort.

Severe stomach pain may be due to gas or even menstrual cramps, sometimes. Yet, it is always best to err on the side of caution and visit your family doctor if you feel that a more serious underlying disease is giving rise to your symptoms; as treatment can then be sought at its earliest, for best results all around.
